Our Commitment to Candle Safety
At Tallwoods Candle Co., we believe that every candle should create a warm, inviting, and enjoyable atmosphere.
We are committed to providing quality candles and educating our customers about proper candle care and safe burning practices.
Because candles involve an open flame, heat, and melted wax, proper handling is essential to help prevent fires, burns, and property damage.
By purchasing and using our candles, you acknowledge the importance of following all product-specific warnings and safety instructions.
Your safety is always our priority.
General Candle Safety Guidelines
For a safe and enjoyable candle-burning experience, please follow these precautions:
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets.
Keep candles away from curtains, bedding, paper, decorations, and other flammable materials.
Always burn candles on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface.
Keep candles away from drafts, ceiling fans, air vents, and open windows.
Never move or touch a candle while it is burning or while the container or wax remains hot.
Never use a candle as a nightlight or burn a candle while sleeping.
Never place candles near items that may catch fire.
Follow all warning labels and product-specific instructions.
Always remain in the room and monitor your candle while it is burning.
Wick Trimming & Maintenance
Proper wick care helps promote a cleaner, more consistent burn.
Before each use:
Trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch (6 mm), unless your candle's instructions specify otherwise.
Remove loose wick trimmings and debris from the wax.
Ensure the wick is centered and upright before lighting.
Never trim or adjust a wick while the candle is burning or the wax is hot.
An excessively long wick may produce a larger flame, increased soot, or uneven burning.
If the flame becomes unusually high, flickers excessively, or produces significant smoke, extinguish the candle safely and allow it to cool before inspecting the wick.
Recommended Burn Time
For best results, always follow the maximum burn duration specified on your candle's label.
Do not burn a candle longer than the manufacturer's recommended maximum burn time.
For many container candles, this may be up to 3–4 hours per session, but the appropriate limit depends on the candle's design and testing.
Burning candles for extended periods can cause excessive heat buildup, increased soot, or container damage.
Allow the candle and container to cool completely before relighting.
First Burn Recommendations
The first burn can influence how evenly your candle burns during future use.
When lighting a candle for the first time:
Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
Allow the wax to melt evenly toward the edges of the container when practical and within the recommended burn-time limit.
Never exceed the maximum recommended burn time in an attempt to achieve a full melt pool.
Monitor the flame and container throughout the burn.
Some wax formulations may leave a small amount of wax along the container walls during initial burns. This does not automatically indicate a defective candle.
Proper Candle Placement
Always place candles in an appropriate location before lighting.
For safe placement:
Use a stable, level, heat-resistant surface.
Keep candles away from flammable objects.
Avoid shelves or enclosed spaces where heat may accumulate.
Keep candles away from children, pets, and high-traffic areas.
Maintain adequate space between multiple burning candles.
Never place candles directly on surfaces that could be damaged by heat.
Candle containers may become extremely hot during use.
Extinguishing Your Candle Safely
Always extinguish candles carefully.
Recommended practices include:
Use an appropriate candle snuffer when possible.
Ensure the flame is completely extinguished.
Do not use water to extinguish a candle.
Avoid blowing forcefully, which may cause hot wax to splatter.
Allow the candle to cool completely before touching, moving, or covering it.
Never leave a recently extinguished candle unattended until you have confirmed the flame is out and the candle is safe.
When to Stop Burning Your Candle
Discontinue use when the wax reaches the minimum remaining level indicated on the product label.
For some container candles, this may be approximately ½ inch of remaining wax, but the appropriate stopping point depends on the container and candle design.
Continuing to burn a candle with insufficient remaining wax may cause excessive heat buildup and damage the container or surrounding surfaces.
Do not attempt to burn every last drop of wax.
Container Safety
Our candle containers are intended to be used only as directed.
To help prevent injuries:
Never use a cracked, chipped, or broken candle container.
Do not expose glass containers to sudden temperature changes.
Do not place candle containers directly on stovetops, burners, or other external heat sources.
Do not move a candle while the wax is hot or liquid.
Discontinue use if the container shows signs of damage or overheating.
If a candle container becomes damaged during use, extinguish the flame safely and discontinue use.
Fragrance Sensitivities & Allergies
Our scented candles may contain fragrance oils, essential oils, or other ingredients that could cause sensitivity in some individuals.
Fragrance perception and tolerance vary from person to person.
For a comfortable experience:
Burn candles in appropriately ventilated spaces.
Discontinue use if irritation or discomfort occurs.
Avoid direct exposure to concentrated fragrance materials.
Do not ingest candle wax or fragrance ingredients.
Our candles are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent medical conditions.
Candle Storage Recommendations
Proper storage helps preserve candle quality and appearance.
We recommend:
Storing candles in a cool, dry location.
Keeping candles away from direct sunlight.
Avoiding excessive heat and temperature fluctuations.
Keeping candles covered when not in use, once completely cooled.
Storing candles away from children and pets.
Exposure to heat or sunlight may cause discoloration, softening, or changes in fragrance characteristics.
Handmade Candle Characteristics
Our candles are handcrafted, which means slight variations in appearance may occur.
Depending on the wax formulation, natural characteristics may include:
Minor color variations
Slight surface imperfections
Wax frosting or crystallization
Small changes in texture
Differences in fragrance perception
These characteristics do not necessarily affect candle performance or safety.
However, if your candle shows signs of damage, unusual overheating, or unsafe burning behavior, discontinue use and contact us.
